Family Saturday Series: Shana Tucker
ChamberSoul Cello & Songs is a multi-instrumental journey that introduces the art of musical storytelling through song for all ages. Audience members will witness the musical “conversations” through improvisation and will also experience a multi-genre program of blues, jazz, pop, and folk.
Growing up on Long Island, NY as a beneficiary of public school arts education, cellist Shana Tucker’s talents awarded her a scholarship to Howard University in Washington, DC, where she was first introduced to jazz. While at Howard, Shana initiated her improvisation chops, but decided to relocate to NYC to study with master cellist Marion Feldman at CUNY-Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music.
Shana’s opened for internationally acclaimed artists including Norah Jones, Lisa Fischer, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Blind Boys of Alabama, and Indigo Girls. An interview with NPR prompted an invitation from Cirque du Soleil to join the company as a cellist and vocalist for their show, KA in Las Vegas, where she stayed and performed for for five years before returning to North Carolina.
Shana is a front-line advocate for arts education. She is teaching artist with Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts, United Arts Council of Raleigh/Wake County (NC), Durham Arts Council, The Smith Center for Performing Arts (Las Vegas, NV), and is a North Carolina A+ Schools Fellow. www.shanatucker.com
